A hush fell on the sold out Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House, as through the smoke and lights the orchestra began to play. A climax in the music, the sound of a voice joining in the orchestra with a powerful “보고싶다 (bo go ship da)”, and Kim Bum Soo appeared to tumultuous screaming and applause from the audience.
The one night only concert was held at the Sydney Opera House on the 27th of March with Kim Bum Soo being accompanied on stage by not only his own band, but also a local Sydney strings orchestra and brass band. From the high of the opening moment to the breathtaking conclusion of the incredible concert, Kim Bum Soo displayed why he is one of the strongest and most respected vocalists of Korea.
The solo artist sung a variety of songs, from his OSTs- the beautiful ‘보고싶다 (bo go ship da)’ from Stairway to Heaven and ‘Appear‘ from Secret Garden, to titles from his own albums like ‘약속‘. He got the audience involved in all-out rendition of ‘Stand By Me‘, sung out the powerful English lyrics to ‘When a Man Loves a Woman‘ and brought the audience to roars of laughter when he suddenly appeared on stage dressed in a cape and mask riding a segway to accompany a guest Korean operatic singer in ‘The Phantom of the Opera‘.
From start to finish the concert was a combination of well-paced songs, amusing antics and demonstrations of a truly powerful set of vocal chords.
The audience was on their feet throughout the concert and the persistent applause and deafening screams of “KIM BUM SOO” called for three encore performances. After expressing his sincere appreciation to his Australian fans and his gratitude for being able to perform on such an iconic stage, the night ended with a final surprise encore performance accompanied only by the piano. With the crowd still on their feet Kim Bum Soo said a final thank-you and, waving and smiling, left the stage.
