MV Monday today takes a look at the first of YG’s hip hop projects, a collaboration between BIGBANG members, best friends and established solo artists, GD and Taeyang.
Their release, Good Boy, is accompanied by a music video shot for the 2015 YouTube Music Awards, and is currently one of two YouTube Music Moment videos, the other being from a popular YouTube cover artist.
YouTube Music Moment videos are directed by top American music video directors, and Good Boy got its American mv treatment from Colin Tilley. Currently nominated for Director of the Year at the 2014 Black Entertainment Television Awards, and boasting a whole host of music video awards, Colin Tilley has made music videos for some of this years biggest hits, including: Saluteby Little Mix; Jason Derulo’s Wiggle; and the controversial Anaconda by Nicki Minaj, one of the only women to not get the note re strong female role models & feminism this year.
It’s not too long ago BIGBANG were apologising for being Bad Boys, but it seems just two years on GD and Taeyang are claiming it just an image and reputation, they are really Good Boys.
Tilley appears to have tried to merge the common styles of Kpop mvs, with markers of his own American styling, much like the current trend for mv concepts.
Good Boy’s visual is very much about Korea as digital and entertainment leaders, Korea as the future. A key element of being a leader in your field is a knowledge of your past, and the ability to embrace and draw influences from those who reigned previously. That is why alongside the high technology and zany, ahead of the curve fashion, there are strong 80/90s vibes.
With warehouse rave styling, and 90s arcade games like Dance Dance Revolution, the sound even includes elements that sound like video games, the mv and track hail back to their industry predecessors.
Good Boy is catchy, and captures elements of the best of both artists, and Colin Tilley certainly pulls off that YG style well.
What do you think of YG’s first of two hip hop projects?

Episode 11 of “Modern Farmer” gives us new insights into old traumas, revealing why some act the way they do. Though Kang Hyuk does his best to get closer to Kang Yoon Hee, it is clear she is still looking towards Lee Min Ki, whether she realizes it or not. And while things are looking up for Hwang Man Goo’s family, the same cannot be said for Yoo Mi Young.
1. Kang Hyuk explains why he is so set on making Kang Yoon Hee happy.
After convincing Kang Yoon Hee to let him tag along to get the tents for the market, Kang Hyuk manages to get her to let him drive on the way back. This was a terrible mistake, of course, because he manages to get them to the ocean rather than back to the village.
Deciding to make the most of being by the sea, Kang Hyuk and Kang Yoon Hee eat and drink together. However, after drinking a bit too much, the two get into a conversation about what his parents think of him doing as he pleases. It is here Kang Hyuk reveals that not only is it like his father is not around, but that his mother passed away eight years ago from overdosing on her antidepressants.
Kang Hyuk tells Kang Yoon Hee that his mother pretended to be strong just like her, and he never knew of the depression. Now when Kang Hyuk sees Kang Yoon Hee having a hard time, he finds that he needs to protect her like he could not for his mother.
2. Hwang Min Gook is no longer ashamed of his parents.
Since it is the day of the father participation class, Hwang Man Goo comes in to teach the class about growing strawberries. However, when he sees his wife secretly peeking in the door, he decides to change his subject to teaching the children Uzbek, his wife’s native language. In doing so, he pulls her into the classroom to show them more. Though Hwang Min Gook is angry at first, when he sees the excitement of the class toward his parents, you can see the little seed of pride grow within him!
3. Yoo Mi Young reveals more about her ex-husband.
After trying and failing to stand in for Choi Eun Woo’s father at school, Park Sang Deuk tries to calm the child’s disappointment in her father. Though it was supposed to be hidden from her mother, Yoo Mi Young steps in at the wrong time and becomes angry when she learns about what they tried to do.
Later, however, she returns to Park Sang Deuk and drinks with him. Drunk, she reveals that her ex-husband had many women, and the only reason she held onto the marriage was for the sake of her daughter. When she did ask for divorce, she said he was so eager for it that he threw money at her and signed it like he was waiting. She once again reiterates that everything she has gone through was punishment for what she did to Park Sang Deuk.
4. Han In Ki’s full past is finally revealed.
Turns out that Han In Ki was indeed part of a band, one possibly about to debut. However, he gets a call that his pregnant wife has collapsed, and though it means everything will fall through for his band if he leaves, he does so anyway to be with his wife.
Unfortunately, it was the last few moments he had with her. She had given birth to their daughter, but the stress of the birth was too much for her body and she passed away right in front of him.
As this story is revealed, Han Sang Eun overhears and is horrified to learn that not only is her mother dead, but she is the cause. Han In Ki runs after her when she flees, trying to explain that it’s not her fault. When she tries to run again, Han In Ki falls and is miraculously able to push out a few words, telling his daughter that it’s not her fault.
5. Lee Min Ki bring Yoo Na back to the village.
Earlier in the episode, Yoo Na tried rejecting her CEO’s party invitation, knowing that there would be drugs there. However, she is dragged along anyway. Unfortunately, the party is busted by the police, and though she had no drugs in her system, her image took a hit.
Seeing the story on TV, Lee Min Ki rushes back to Seoul. Clearly wanting to protect her from everything, Lee Min Ki sneaks her out and brings her back to the village.

“Birth of a Beauty” continues with comedy relief. I am glad there is some character development and I still remain hopeful this show doesn’t go into makjang territory. There is some progress on Sa Ra‘s (Han Ye Seul) revenge and we’re moving on with the beauty’s growing feelings for Tae Hee (Joo Sang Wook). Aside, Han Min Hyeok (Han Sang Jin) is taking over Winner’s Group by ousting Tae Hee’s grandmother out of the company. Here are our top five moments from this episode:
1. Couple!
After discovering Tae Hee’s psychological results, Sa Ra was disappointed after hearing his answer about not loving her. After being teased by Sa Ra’s resolve about discovering Tae Hee’s true feelings, the genius counters her sly gags by pulling off his pants for dry cleaning with the idea of seeing him embarrassed. Smooth!
2. Celebrity!
Thanks to her food obsession, Sa Ra becomes a social media phenomenon. She was filmed on camera several times about her eating her meals very well. Combined with her pretty looks, Sa Ra is suited to be the perfect candidate for a judge position on a culinary program of HBS… until Han Min Hyeok embarks on a personal quest to find his beauty at all costs.
3. Kidnapping!
Kang Joon (Jung Gyu Woon) is flipping out during his date with Sa Ra when he receives a threatening text message on his phone from Sa Geum Ran. Of course, this joyful venture is staged by Sa Ra and her partner, Tae Hee. They capture Kang Joon and torment him until the poor guy passes out from exhaustion.
4. Panic!
Tae Hee was about to meet his biological grandmother after twenty years of absence. Unfortunately, the elder is arrested by the police and learns she is framed by Min Yeok’s family. On top of that, Tae Hee is forced watching his grandmother being escorted by police officers while experiencing a panic attack. The genius is rescued and tended by Sa Ra. We then learn Tae Hee is suffering from a Broken Heart syndrome since his painful childhood.
5. Busted!
Chae Yeon (Wang Ji Hye) discovers Sa Ra’s true identity by asking her brother, Ji Hoon, about Tae Hee’s relationship with her rival. The surgeon cracks under pressure and reveals to Chae Yeon that Sa Geum Ran was his patient three months ago for reconstructive surgery. The evil witch finally deduces Sa Ra is Sa Geum Ran in disguise.
Thoughts:
I didn’t expect the plot to be moving so quickly. Lee Kang Joon is about to be arrested for homicide of his wife, Sa Geum Ran, thanks to the evidence gathered from the kidnapping scene. I’m so glad Chae Yeon is having a taste of her own medicine. Feeling excluded from the in-laws, she is going through the same humiliation Geum Ran unjustly received before the attempted murder. Sa Ra is enjoying it! As for Min Hyeok, his motives are shown to be really one dimensional: taking over Winner Group and finding Sa Ra for fame! I just wish there is more into his character when Tae Hee will be competing against him for the chairman position.
It was sad when Geum Ran’s mother was taken away to a psychiatric institution for the insane by Kang Joon. If the husband is bound to be sent behind bars and is the only person knowing the grandmother’s whereabouts, I wonder how Sa Ra will find her. With Chae Yeon knowing the beauty’s identity, this will be very interesting as the story is switching its main antagonist.
Of course, let’s not forget this moment we have been all waiting for!
