When are K-pop idols ever going to speak freely about their dates?
Short answer: Never.
In the years since becoming a K-pop fan, I have had a lot of crushes. I understand these feelings of affection are far from becoming real relationships. Nevertheless, when I go to sleep I know my love is waiting for me with open legs arms and that we are going to have the best times of our lives together … until 6:30 a.m. or when my neighbor’s dog starts to bark at midnight.
I consider myself a normal person. When I hear my crush is with someone, I get that he deserves to be happy. But … some K-pop fans go batshit crazy when they find out that their idol is dry-humping someone real and alive, instead of a pillow with the picture of an idol. (Disclaimer: I heard about this kind of behavior therefore – it’s not something that I have personally experienced. Ahem)
Most of us don’t think it’s sane when fans leave fan cafes or stop idolizing someone solely based on the notion that he or she is taken. But let’s try to get in the shoes of these obsessed creatures that I like to lovingly call “idiots.”
Remember that you can only take offense about doing these activities if and — only if — you’d scalp yourself at the thought of your idol dating. If you can, take it, then continue to support.
THESE LOVESTRUCK FANS:
- Buy expensive gifts for their idol’s birthday, concerts, first day of filming a drama, pet’s birthday and so on. Any special date is the right moment to buy a ridiculously expensive thing that they know their idol would like.
- Repeatedly buy a massive number of CDs to get to the fan signs.
- Try to get into every show their idol appears in to scream their lungs out during the fanchants.
- Don’t have a real-life relationship as they are waiting for their oppa (or noona).
- Spend 24 hours a day obsessing over their idol, their future wedding, honeymoon, etc.
- Every other thing you can imagine …
Now as you stand in those shoes, busted up from chasing a van full of idols, how do you feel when Dispatch releases photos of [insert name of bias here] with a romantic interest in a lovey dovey situation? Or worse: Conjectures based on tweets or pictures with similar clothing being shared between two public figures?
Obviously, these “samchul fans” need to release some tension. And while I don’t sympathize with most of the decisions they make while pining for their dreamed honeymoon, I kind of get why these things happen.
The only solution I can find for these idiots is to stop making collages of wedding dresses with cutouts of their bias’ memorabilia and start understanding that their idols are singers, not available bachelors. Remember IU and Eunhyuk? She received the most backlash – a lot of her samchul fans scratched her name in the marriage certificate they had prepared, and her innocent image suffered a lot because of the fan reaction to the situation. We know how many times these so-called “fans” have followed Jessica and gotten into the rooms of DBSK. God knows what EXO fans are doing while I’m writing this.
Only when this fan behavior stops will the idols be more like Hara and less like Sulli. They’ll admit to their dating relationships, instead of trying to make everyone believe unicorns are real and Sulli and Choiza aren’t doing it.
